Towven.com – The San Francisco 49ers have traded star wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick.
The trade will be finalized on March 12, coinciding with the start of the NFL’s new league year.
Deebo Samuel, drafted by the 49ers in 2019, quickly became a pivotal player, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 and playing a crucial role in the team’s journey to Super Bowl LIV.
However, his performance declined in recent seasons, with the 2024 season seeing him record 51 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns, along with 42 carries for 136 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

The decision to trade Samuel stems from salary cap considerations. 49ers General Manager John Lynch indicated that the team’s financial constraints necessitated this move, allowing them to free up cap space and acquire additional draft capital.
For the Washington Commanders, acquiring Samuel represents a strategic effort to bolster their offense. Pairing him with standout receiver Terry McLaurin aims to provide quarterback Jayden Daniels with a more dynamic receiving corps.
Commanders General Manager Adam Peters, who was part of the 49ers’ front office during Samuel’s drafting, expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with the versatile receiver.
Samuel’s tenure with the 49ers was marked by both remarkable highs and recent challenges. As he transitions to the Commanders, both teams look to reshape their rosters and strategies for the upcoming season.
