The incident occurred as Stone and her band were traveling from a performance in Alabama to Atlanta, their van overturned and was subsequently struck by a large truck. While nine other passengers survived, Stone was the sole fatality.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Angie Stone began her illustrious music career in the late 1970s as a member of The Sequence, one of the first all-female hip-hop groups.
